A very nice sterling silver gilt and enamel watch fob medal given to Bombardier Joseph Francis Bedford as a memento from his commanding officer Major Richard Humphrey Davy in 1918. It is likely that Bdr Bedford served as Major Davy’s batman 1917-18.

This very attractive medal is made from gilded sterling silver and encapsulated behind glass in a solid silver frame. The medal is beautifully hand engraved and enamelled. The obverse is decorated with the badge of the Royal Artillery and the inscription, “From Major Davey to Bdr Bedford”. It is also stamped with a full English (Birmingham) hallmark corresponding to the year 1918, and with the maker’s mark, “W.J.D” (William James Dingley). The reverse is engraved, “289 Siege Battery R.G.A. – France 1917 – Italy 1918”. Diameter: 30.5mm. Good condition.

Joseph Francis Bedford was born in Aberystwyth, Wales in 1881. Following his First World War service in France & Italy, he settled in Chaxhill, Gloucestershire where he was employed as a licensed victualler. He died in the Gloucester area in 1945, aged 63.

Major Richard Humphrey Davy was the commanding officer of 289 Siege Bty Royal Garrison Artillery, was mentioned in dispatches in 1918 and was awarded the Italian War Merit Cross for his service in Italy.

289th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery was formed at Plymouth in November 1916 and was equipped with six-inch howitzers. They proceeded to France in March 1917 and in November were sent to Italy as part of 80 (Mobile) Brigade RGA and remained there for the duration.
